What’s in the pantry?

Unless you plan on eating takeout for your entire trip, you’re going to need some pantry staples to keep you going. We often prepare dishes at home, freeze portions and then heat and eat at camp. (Look for a future post about this).

For those days when your freezer is empty and the fridge is looking bare, it’s time to turn to your pantry. Storage space inside the camper is limited, so choose your items mindfully.

Our pantry usually includes:

  • Crackers – usually at least 2 boxes.
  • Cookies. We always like something sweet
  • Dry pasta and a jar a marinara sauce
  • Canned tuna, clams, smoked oysters
  • Canned dolmades (stuffed grape leaves)
  • Canned beans: Baked beans and black beans
  • Sometimes, pouches of Indian dishes (dal, etc.) or ramen noodles
  • Coffee, tea, hot chocolate
  • Evaporated milk (used as our emergency coffee creamer)
  • Herbs and spices (See how to build a kit); salt and pepper
  • Rice (uncooked dry and shelf-stable cooked pouch)
  • Flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda (or mix ahead); Kodiak cakes flapjack/waffle mix
  • Olive oil and balsamic vinegar
  • Sugar

We use our pantry for a quick meal, or get creative for an improvised dish. Taste is very personal, so bring what you like to eat at home.
