Harvest Hosts Review: Valcour Brewing, Plattsburgh, NY

On our journey north to Montreal and Quebec this summer (more on that in future posts!), we stopped at Valcour Brewing Company in Plattsburgh, NY for a night.

Valcour Brewing is located in an old stone Army barracks, circa 1838. Today it’s home to a full-service restaurant — with indoor and outdoor seating — featuring Valcour’s brews.

We arrived at 3 p.m. on a Sunday and checked in at the restaurant’s hostess. She directed us to the well marked and roped off Harvest Hosts sites adjacent to the building. Each of the four sites Harvest Hosts sites is big enough to accommodate big rigs, and ours was very level.

On Lake Champlain

A short walk from Valcour is Lake Champlain and the Empire State Trail, a multi-use trail which connects New York City with Canada via the Hudson River Greenway and other rail-trail and canal trails.

We walked to Lake Champlain to take in the view (lovely), then up and down the Empire State Trail to give our boy a good walk before we returned to Vacour for dinner and drinks.

Food and Drink

Two trays with food at the bar
Reuben sandwich with poutine and fish tacos with fries.

I had the fish tacos with fries and the Blueberry Lager, and Vic had a Reuben sandwich with a side of poutine, paired with a “Rusty Nail,” a nut brown ale.

I found the lager a little sweet, but very refreshing; Vic was a fan of the Rusty Nail. Our entrees came out quickly and were good. It was our first experience with poutine, and it was tasty. The fries were crisp and the gravy was good, but it was missing the signature squeaky cheese curds that you expect from poutine.

After a very filling meal, we retired to the camper to a very quiet evening.

We enjoyed our stay and are thinking about ways to pair a stay at Valcour with a ride on the Empire State Trail. Hmmm.
