Harvest Hosts Review: Barrel Oak Winery, Deleplane, VA
Barrel Oak Winery and Farm Taphouse is located in Deleplane, Virginia, just off of Interstate 66, about an hour west of Washington, DC. We camped there for free through our Harvest Hosts membership.
The property is big and accommodates large weekend crowds inside the tasting room, on the patios and at the scores of picnic tables dotting the hills. On a recent Tuesday afternoon, an hour before closing, there were only four visitors.
When we arrived, we were directed to park in the overflow area at the top of a hill, above the winery. We found a spot that was mostly level with great views of the vines, hops and a magnificent sunset.
They offer wine tastings at $12/each in two tracks – “Fruitier, More Approachable Wines” and “Bigger, Bolder, More Complex Wines.” Beer tastings are 4 for $15.
We opted for the “Bolder” tasting, which included a Reserve Chardonnay, Vintners Select Rose (served room temperature), Mourvedre, an Estate Norton and a “Chocolate Lab” – their port-style dessert wine made from Chambourcin grapes. We were also offered the Seyval Blanc off the “Approachable” list and liked it enough to purchase a bottle for later.
Camping was good. There was some road noise from I-66, but we didn’t notice it after we retired for the evening.
