Harvest Hosts Review: Kahnawake Brewing Co., Kahnawake, QC
Kahnawake Brewing Co. bills itself as “the first Native-owned microbrewery on First Nations territory in Canada.” That territory is the Kahnawake Mohawk Reserve on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, just south of Montreal.
The brewery is located on a somewhat busy road and has a large gravel parking lot. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Wednesday. It was quiet with just a couple of cars parked in the lot. We were greeted outside and directed to park at the edge of the lot. It was mostly level side to side, but needed to raise the tongue.
After settling in, we went inside for a late lunch/early dinner and some cold adult beverages.
Food and Drink
Kahnawake has a full food menu, offering quality pub food. Think big pretzels, salads, burgers, wings, pizza and – because it’s Canada – poutine. Vic ordered the wings, made from capons, that were billed as larger than regular wings, and Tracy opted for the puttanesca pizza. While we waited for our food, friendly staff offered us free popcorn to munch.
The food arrived quickly. Vic devoured a plate of six large wings with sweet Thai chili sauce. The puttanesca pizza had all the flavors of puttanesca pasta – tomatoes, olives and anchovies. Delicious.
Vic gave a thumbs up to his Arnold Swartzlager, a black lager. Tracy’s Hopped Wheat Ale (no fun name for that) was tasty and a good pairing with the pizza.
If you’re not into beer, Kahnawake has a full bar, offering wine and mixed drinks.
After Dinner
After our meal, we retired to our camper and the saw the parking lot steadily fill up. Kahnawake is definitely popular with locals! We heard cars coming and going, but no noise coming from the brewery building. After closing time, the parking lot cleared out.
And speaking of noise, we heard cars and trucks on the road next to the parking lot, but it wasn’t too bad and didn’t disturb our sleep. We definitely recommend a visit to Kahnawake Brewing Co. The food and beer are good and the staff are helpful and friendly. If you go, we recommend arriving early in the day for ease of parking. And if you’re sensitive to road noise, bring some ear plugs.
